Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, carrying four astronauts, reached orbit and is set to connect with the International Space Station later today.
The spacecraft will attach to the Harmony module, a part of the space station that links different sections. This mission is a big moment for commercial spaceflight. Astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary are traveling to the space station together on a mission supported by their governments. These countries haven’t sent people to space in over 40 years, making this a historic event.
The astronauts on Ax-4 are Commander Peggy Whitson from the United States, Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla from India, Mission Specialist Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland, and Mission Specialist Tibor Kapu from Hungary. Whitson, who has been to space before, said this mission shows that space exploration is for everyone, not just a few countries. She feels honored to lead astronauts from nations returning to space after so long. The mission carries the hopes of many people who dream of what space can offer.
Research and future goals in space
The astronauts will remain tow weeks on the International Space Station. They will do about 60 research projects from 31 countries. These projects will study human health, Earth from space, and sciences like biology and materials. The research will help each country improve its space programs and lead to new technology.
Ax-4 is also a step toward Axiom Space’s plan to build Axiom Station, the first commercial space station. By doing research and testing how things work in space, this mission helps prepare for a future where people can live and work in space for longer periods. A live webcast of the spacecraft docking with the space station will start at 5:00 a.m. today (June 26). People can watch it on Axiom Space’s website, SpaceX’s website, or NASA+. The webcast will show the astronauts arriving and being welcomed by other astronauts already on the station, marking the start of their work in space.
