Cryptocurrencies were created by an anonymous person or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. The first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, was introduced in a 2008 whitepaper titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System," and it was released as open-source software in 2009.
