To be able to explain his core point, pedagogically speaking, it is of course important that Gregory makes the assumption about relatively unchanging understanding of physics. However, I wouldn't be too surprised if we were to discover that some objects or locations light years apart in the good old three dimensional space turn out to be very close to each other when measured by some currently unknown metrics — and thus they can indeed be part of a same very closely integrated cognitive systems.
Also, the diversity of preferences and viewpoints has always been a great strength of any collective decision-making agent and will most likely to keep doing so in the future as well. I wouldn't explain Fermi paradox by "they all want to turn inward". Sure there will be desire to expand. If no-one else wants to do it I will do it just for the sake of being different.
As you talked about your personal AI projects, I have a 1/3 metaphorical, 2/3 literal question regarding the supercharging one's personal productivity with AI:
Do you think we will soon have "one man unicorns" — super valuable businesses conceived by individual visionaires, and operationally run by AI agents?
Finally, that was one great way to wrap up the conversation!
