The ability to pay attention greatly affects what a person notices around them. As they walk through a crowded street, their focus might shift to a bright billboard or a sleek car parked nearby. Attention is the brain’s way of choosing which details to notice at any moment. However, this focus can change quickly. When they reach a busy crossing, thoughts of the billboard or car fade away. Instead, their attention turns to moving traffic, a blinking walk sign, and other people to avoid while crossing.
How the mind adjusts attention for tasks
Yale researchers created an adaptive computation system, which acts like a program to manage the brain’s basic processes. These processes are the small steps the mind takes to understand things, like where an object is or how fast it moves. For example, when crossing a street, adaptive computation helps the person focus more on the walk sign than the shiny car. The study, published in Psychological Review, suggests that the mind figures out what’s important for a goal and uses its resources wisely to handle it.
In one test, volunteers saw eight circles of the same color on a screen. The researchers highlighted four circles and asked the participants to follow them as all eight moved randomly. To measure attention, they asked people to press a key when they saw a quick flash on a circle. The adaptive computation model accurately predicted where and when attention shifted. In another test, participants tracked four objects with extra distractors and varying speeds. When the objects stopped, they rated how hard it was to follow them. The model explained these ratings, showing that more effort made the task feel harder.
This work could lead to better understanding of how the mind works and inspire more human-like artificial intelligence (AI) systems that focus on goals while ignoring distractions.
