MetaMask, a popular crypto wallet, has introduced MetaMask USD, or $mUSD. This is the first stablecoin (a type of cryptocurrency designed to hold a steady value, usually pegged to the US dollar) launched by such a wallet.
Developed by Consensys, MetaMask USD is issued through Bridge, a platform from Stripe that handles stablecoin creation and management. It runs on M0, a decentralized system for stablecoin infrastructure that ensures secure and transparent operations across blockchains.
The stablecoin integrates deeply into the MetaMask wallet. It supports cross-chain use and works with the M0 liquidity network for smooth exchanges. This makes MetaMask USD a neutral, liquid asset easy to buy, sell, or trade, which helps users convert traditional money into crypto with certain payment methods. It opens doors to features in decentralized apps (dapps), as well as decentralized finance, or DeFi.
A foundation for easier crypto access
Initially available on Ethereum and Linea, a faster, cheaper layer-2 network built on Ethereum by Consensys, MetaMask USD aims to boost activity in Linea's DeFi ecosystem. It will connect with lending markets, decentralized exchanges where users trade directly without intermediaries, and other platforms.
Stablecoins like MetaMask USD form a key part of the crypto world, supporting trading, lending, sending money across borders, and DeFi, with huge monthly volumes. This wallet-native version simplifies entry into self-custodial crypto, where users manage their own funds securely. At launch, it enables easy onramps, swaps, transfers, and bridging between chains. By year's end, it will work with the MetaMask Card for spending at Mastercard-accepting merchants worldwide.
Built with Bridge and M0, MetaMask USD ensures compliance with rules, real-time transparency, and interoperability. It is fully backed one-to-one by high-quality dollar assets. Leaders note it reduces barriers to web3, cuts costs, and lets users treat crypto like regular money. Amid new US laws on stablecoins, MetaMask USD is set to launch later in 2025, with more details soon on MetaMask channels.
