New microreactor test bed opens at Idaho National Laboratory

A new test facility for advanced nuclear reactors has opened at Idaho National Laboratory. The Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments, known as DOME, is the first test bed of its kind in the world. It will allow private companies to develop, test, and demonstrate small nuclear reactors called microreactors. These reactors produce up to 20 megawatts of thermal energy.

DOME was created to speed up the growth of nuclear energy in the United States. It provides a safe, flexible space for real-world testing under actual operating conditions. Developers can gather performance data there to support design checks and future licensing by regulators. The facility was built inside the large containment dome of the former Experimental Breeder Reactor-II, an historic reactor that operated from 1964 to 1994. The structure measures 80 feet across and 100 feet tall.

Repurposed historic dome supports faster nuclear testing

Construction of DOME finished almost a year ahead of schedule to meet national needs for reliable, low-carbon power. Officials from the Department of Energy and the laboratory marked the official opening on April 8. The test bed forms part of a wider effort to strengthen U.S. leadership in nuclear technology and provide abundant, affordable energy.

Experiments at DOME will be chosen each year through a competitive process. Companies must show their technology is ready, have fuel available, and present a plan for regulatory approval. They will pay for their own testing. The first fueled experiment is expected later this year. Radiant’s Kaleidos Demonstration Unit, a high-temperature gas-cooled microreactor, will begin a year-long test program in spring.

DOME offers expert support and real operating conditions to help reduce the time and cost of bringing new reactor designs to market. It is expected to play a key role in testing innovative concepts and turning them into practical technologies. The opening marks an important step toward expanding clean, reliable nuclear power options in the country.
