Warnings over the arrival of “Q-Day” — the point when quantum computers become capable of breaking modern encryption — are growing louder after new research suggested the threat could emerge far sooner than previously expected. []

For years, cybersecurity experts believed the risk remained decades away. But recent findings from Google and other researchers have narrowed the timeline dramatically, with some companies now targeting 2029 as a key deadline for deploying quantum-resistant security systems. [2]

Q-Day refers to the moment a sufficiently powerful quantum computer can crack the cryptographic systems that protect internet traffic, banking systems, emails, medical records, government communications, and cryptocurrency wallets. Current encryption methods, including RSA and elliptic curve cryptography, depend on mathematical problems considered extremely difficult for conventional computers to solve.

Quantum computers operate differently. Instead of standard bits limited to 0 or 1, they use qubits, which can process multiple states simultaneously. This allows quantum machines to tackle complex calculations at speeds impossible for traditional systems.

Researchers fear hostile actors may already be collecting encrypted information to decrypt later once quantum hardware becomes powerful enough. The so-called “harvest now, decrypt later” strategy could expose sensitive records years after they were originally stolen.

A recent report from the Global Risk Institute warned that a cryptographically relevant quantum computer could appear within the next decade. The report also cautioned that many organizations remain unprepared for the transition to post-quantum security systems.

Concern intensified after a March study involving researchers from Google, Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley and the Ethereum Foundation found that future quantum machines may need far fewer qubits than previously estimated to break elliptic curve cryptography, widely used in blockchain and cryptocurrency systems.

Governments and technology companies are now racing to prepare. The National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized new post-quantum encryption standards in 2024, while firms including Cloudflare and Google have accelerated migration plans.

The threat extends beyond finance and communications. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology are also developing ultra-efficient security chips for wireless medical devices such as pacemakers and insulin pumps, which could become vulnerable in a post-quantum era.

Despite the urgency, industry adoption remains slow, raising fears that the transition to quantum-safe cybersecurity may not be completed before Q-Day arrives.
