Each year, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) appoints a small number of researchers as ACM Fellows. It is not a reward for hype or visibility, but for careers that have genuinely shaped how the technology we use every day works. The 2025 class of Fellows —71 researchers from 14 countries— offers a remarkably clear signal of where computing is heading once it stops chasing headlines.

Technological maturity

The first major theme is unmistakable: artificial intelligence has entered a phase of critical maturity. Recognition is no longer driven by models being larger or marginally more accurate, but by whether they are reliable, verifiable and safe. Many of the Fellows have contributed to methods for testing neural networks, identifying failure modes, ensuring robustness and reducing risk in AI systems deployed in real-world settings. The message is unambiguous: the central question is no longer “what can AI do?”, but “how far can we trust it?”

At scale

A second, equally solid strand concerns systems architecture and large-scale computing. This includes fundamental contributions to heterogeneous chip design, systems-on-chip (SoC), on-chip networks and platforms capable of scaling from embedded devices to data centres. This work rarely attracts public attention, yet it is precisely what allows AI, cloud services and scientific computing to operate with energy efficiency and long-term reliability.

Security and networks

Security and privacy form another central pillar. From system security and access control to usable privacy and the protection of machine-learning models, these awards reflect a structural concern: technology is now critical infrastructure, and its failures carry social, economic and political consequences.

Advances in distributed systems and networking also feature prominently. Many of the technologies we now take for granted —from peer-to-peer architectures to core principles of cloud design— originated in deep academic research years, sometimes decades, ago. It is a reminder that many of today’s “technological revolutions” rest on ideas developed well before they became commercially visible.

Where power sits

Geographically, the picture is telling. The United States continues to account for a large share of Fellows, with universities such as Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon and Columbia acting as long-standing centres of innovation. Asia is consolidating its position, particularly India and China, in areas such as networking, IoT and software engineering. Europe stands out in theoretical foundations and software research, while Latin America —with cases such as Chile— shows that leadership in data science and information theory is far from geographically confined.

Taken together, the ACM Fellows 2025 point to the arrival of a more responsible, more resilient and more self-aware form of technology. Less flashy, perhaps — but infinitely more consequential.

It is very true. Especially now in the era of the rapid catch up of the web3 industry a lot of groundbreaking solutions have decades of legacy behind them. Functional programming, lattice based cryptography, homomorphic encryption etc etc. They are rarely on the spotlight of public attention but act as foundational pillars under the hood.
